About This Place

Located in the heart of New Orleans at 838 Esplanade Ave, Port of Call is a beloved neighborhood gem that masterfully blends American comfort food with a unique twist. Specializing in hearty burgers and prime steaks, this inviting spot is renowned for its signature pairing: juicy, perfectly cooked burgers served alongside generously loaded baked potatoes. The atmosphere is warm and intimate, with a charming “divey” naval decor that adds character and a sense of local authenticity, making every visit feel like a casual yet special occasion.

The menu here is refreshingly focused, offering just two main pillars — steaks and burgers — but excelling at both. Diners rave about the Cheeseburger, often described as the best in New Orleans, boasting a juicy, flavorful patty crowned with melted cheese and complemented by the unique accompaniment of a loaded baked potato. Customize your potato to your heart’s content with sour cream, cheddar cheese, mushrooms, chives, and bacon bits at no extra cost, creating a comforting, indulgent side that perfectly balances the meal.

Steak lovers will appreciate cuts like Filet Mignon, New York Strip, and Rib Eye, all freshly trimmed daily. Each steak dinner arrives with a crisp salad dressed to your liking, a buttered baked potato, and hot Tuscany bread, crafting a simple yet deeply satisfying dining experience. While some customers note that the mushrooms come canned, the overall execution—from the tenderness of the steaks to the rich, cheesy pull on the baked potatoes—is consistently lauded.

Beverage offerings at Port of Call add another layer of enjoyment. The bar serves creative and generous tropical cocktails, like the must-try Monsoon and the iconic Hurricane, which perfectly complement the hearty fare. The thoughtful cocktail selection, alongside classics like a proper Bloody Mary, offers guests a festive, welcoming vibe that invites relaxation and conversation.

What truly sets Port of Call apart is not just the food, but the genuine local spirit permeating every corner—from the friendly staff that makes you feel at home to the cozy seats at the bar where you can take in the charming surroundings. Several patrons mention their eagerness to send friends here for a good burger and cold drink, a testament to the place’s reputation and consistent quality.

Whether you’re craving a juicy Mushroom Cheeseburger with a fully loaded baked potato or a perfectly cooked Rib Eye paired with a fresh salad and a steaming baked potato smothered in butter, Port of Call delivers an authentically New Orleans dining experience that is both comforting and memorable. It’s a rare spot where simplicity meets excellence, and where every bite tells a story of care, local pride, and delicious indulgence.

A great little intimidate bar with tasty burgers. They come with baked potatoes, which is fun. The drinks are delicious, tropical, and generous. I send folks looking for a great burger here. It's about time I did a review. Port of Call is much beloved.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Absolutely incredible! Hands down the best burger I’ve had in a long time—juicy, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. The loaded baked potato was the perfect side, hearty and delicious. And if you go, you have to try Neptune’s Monsoon—it's a must! Great vibes, great food, definitely worth the visit!

This is the most delicious well priced restaurants in the area. They have two options here. Steak and burgers w/salad and baked potatoes. That's it. They do it well. My ONLY issue is they use canned mushrooms(yuck). Now I know i wont get them again. The steaks were perfectly cooked so easy to cut. The cheese pull on the potatoes was top notch. 3 dollar soda w the cup to go is awesome and their alcohol drinks are so fun. Wine selection is small.

Just a cool local divey spot with great Naval decor all over. Menu is super limited (which i love because it means they know what they are good at ) of just steaks and burgers. Burgers come with a baked potato which you can customize, and they know how to make a proper Bloody Mary.

If you’re in New Orleans and craving a burger, look no further than Port of Call. Their cheeseburger is perfection and legendary. Paired with their signature baked potato, it’s a meal that feels both comforting and unique to New Orleans. The laid back, cozy atmosphere makes Port of Call full of character, with staff who make you feel at home. This is not just one of the best burgers in New Orleans...it’s one of the best I’ve had anywhere.

If you want really good drinks and a good vibe, I recommend this place. The only downfall is that this place is very small and does not fit a lot of people. Good burgers, nothing to special. I wish the loaded potatoes had real bacon

Local spot to the core. Good food, nice staff, easy to drink cocktails. Seating is a bit limited, but the kitchen moves quickly.
